Fixed Blacklist API Requests Timing Out

We fixed an issue that could cause API requests for your blacklists to hang or eventually fail.

Depending on the tool you were using, this could appear as a 504 Gateway Timeout after about a minute, or simply as a request that never finished. Other API endpoints continued working normally, which made it look like the blacklist feature itself was the problem.

What was happening

The slowdown came from how profile counts were calculated.

Instead of counting only the profiles in the lists being returned to you, Botdog was checking across far more data than needed on every request.

As the overall system grew, that extra work could take longer than the request was allowed to run.

What changed

Botdog now counts only the lists included in your request.

This means:

  • Blacklist API requests return much faster
  • Profile counts remain accurate
  • Regular list endpoints are faster too
  • Fetching a single list is also quicker

We also corrected the profile count for deleted contacts. Previously, deleted profiles could still be included in the total, making a list appear to contain more people than it actually showed. Deleted profiles are now excluded from the count.
